How I Went from Smoking a Pack a Day to Becoming an Ironman

The Wake-Up Call

Back in 2018, my daily routine looked very different. I was carrying extra weight, smoking heavily, and running on low energy. The moment that truly hit me was realizing I couldn't even walk up two flights of stairs without needing to pause halfway to catch my breath. I knew something had to change, but I didn't know where to start.

Around that time, my former colleague and longtime friend moved to Iași, and we found ourselves working in the same office once again. He was in the middle of training for his first Ironman. To be honest, I didn't even know what an Ironman was at the time, but watching his discipline and energy lit a spark in me. I wanted that same vitality for myself.

The 5-Year Grind

Juggling Life, Work, and Consistency

It took longer than we originally planned. There were weeks when life got in the way and consistency felt brutally hard to maintain. But giving up wasn't an option. The structured coaching kept me accountable, adapting the training around my real life so I could keep moving forward without burning out.

The Finish Line in Barcelona

Five years after standing on the sidelines as a spectator, I returned to Barcelona -this time wearing a race bib.

Crossing that finish line and hearing the words "Cristinel, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!" was an overwhelming emotion. It was the culmination of thousands of small decisions: choosing to wake up early, choosing to eat well, and choosing not to give up when progress felt slow.

Life After the Medal

Becoming an Ironman changed far more than just my physical stats.

Today, my daily life is completely different. The physical endurance I gained gives me endless energy for my work and everyday activities. I enjoy being active, playing sports, and living without physical limitations. The best part? My transformation has inspired my friends, colleagues, and family to take on their own health and fitness journeys.

If you're sitting where I was in 2018—feeling like the goal is too far away or that you're starting too late—just focus on the next 100 meters. With the right plan, patience, and support, you are capable of far more than you think.
